Date: Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 April Location: Civic Theatre Time: 7.15pm Produced by: Phoenix Operatic Society Price: Full price £11.50, Concessions £10.50
Phoenix Operatic Society return in 2015 with one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time – Gypsy. The story is based on a book by Arthur Laurents, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.
Mama Rose Hovick has big plans and the future all mapped out for her daughters. Baby June is the innocent ‘star to be’ appearing in numerous shabby Vaudeville stages across America in the 1920’s. However the quiet, unconfident older sister Louise must decide if she wants to live in her shadows or give up everything to be a star.
Times are changing, the popularity of the much riskier style of Burlesque is on the rise and the audience is now also expecting to see more of their stars than ever. This musical features classics – Let Me Entertain You, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, Gotta Have A Gimmick and the truly show stopping song Rose’s Turn.
Gypsy is a moving, emotional and a spectacular evening of entertainment. It goes behind the scenes of the crumbling music halls to the growing decadence of the new Burlesque theatres and the fame and fortune that awaits Louise, as she becomes… Gypsy Rose Lee!
Music by Jule Styne.
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Date: Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 May 2015 Location: Civic Theatre Time: 7.15pm Produced by: Greasbrough Operatic Society Price: Full price £12 – Concessions £10 (Tuesday only)
This musical romance centres on a group of American sailors and Navy nurses stationed in the South Pacific during World War II.
Nellie Forbush, a Navy nurse from Arkansas falls in love with Emile de Becque, a French plantation owner. Lieutenant Joseph Cable arrives and finds himself involved with Liat, the young daughter of Bloody Mary, the local Tonkinese grass-skirt vendor. As the war against Japan escalates, reality sets in for both Nellie and Joe, who struggle with their unconventional love affairs.
‘South Pacific’ was Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s 5th musical, written in 1949 and based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel: ‘Tales of the South Pacific’.
With memorable songs such as I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, Some Enchanted Evening and There Is Nothing Like A Dame – which became memorable standards and the Broadway musical won ten Tony Awards. This is a show for all generations to enjoy.

This talented artist began his career over three decades ago with appearances on Junior Showtime, followed by a grounding on the tough Northern club circuit.
Joe’s big break came in 1981 when he was a finalist on London Weekend Television’s Search For A Star – this lead to appearances at the London Palladium with Bob Hope and The Talk of the Town. A short time later, Joe received the Variety Club of Britain award as Most Promising Artiste of the Year. Television specials in the UK and USA followed.
Joe’s repertoire of voices is endless and includes hundreds of the world’s top singers, however, he is perhaps best known for his impersonation of Shirley Bassey who has commented, “Joe can do me better than I can do myself”.
During his career, Joe has received gold and platinum discs for his albums, enjoyed sell-out concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as touring Australia several times.
Now, Joe is looking forward to new challenges, new songs to sing and new audiences to thrill.

The Story of ENIGMA is one of the Second World War’s most fascinating stories. The Allied Codebreakers deciphered a vast number of German secret messages and used the intelligence gained to hasten Allied victory. The Germans had entrusted their secret communications to an ingenious ciphering machine the Enigma, which was portable, easily operated, and could be set up in millions of ways. The codes were used and every one was changed every 24 hours.
The Allies gained invaluable information about troop and aircraft dispositions, orders of battle, U-boat movements, technical development, military intentions and tank and artillery strengths. It is generally reckoned that the intelligence from Enigma shortened the war by about two years.
Dr Mark Baldwin has made a detailed study of the Enigma machine and the code-breaking work at Bletchley Park. From his research, Dr Mark Baldwin has prepared an entertaining and instructive show and has built up a unique collection of slides which illustrate the main features of those important facts of the Second World War.
The show is followed by a Q & A, plus there will be an opportunity to get involved with a hands-on demonstration of one of the very few surviving Enigma machines.

The Munchkins fete Dorothy as a heroine. Dorothy wants to go home to Kansas and seeks the help of the kind Sorceress of the North. Only the great Wizard of Oz, says the Sorceress, can help Dorothy get back to Kansas.
Dorothy persuades three friends to accompany her on the trip to the Emerald City to see the Wizard. They are Scarecrow, who lacks a brain, he thinks; the Tin Woodman, who has no heart, and the Cowardly Lion, who would like to have some courage.
The Wicked Witch of the West vows vengeance on Dorothy and does all she can to stop the friends getting to the Emerald City. But they do reach it, and manage to see the Wizard. He will only help them, he says, if they kill the Wicked Witch of the West, an apparently impossible task.
