X-Factor Star to Appear in Rotherham Civic Theatre Panto

Andy Abraham - Sleeping Beauty

Rotherham Civic Theatre is delighted to announce X-Factor star Andy Abraham will be starring in their spectacular family pantomime Sleeping Beauty this Christmas.

Andy was dubbed ‘the voice of the people’ when he appeared on the show in 2005, coming runner up. He has since gone on to record four studio albums, one of which reached number two in the charts, performed in numerous UK tours as well as being the UK’s entry in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest.

He is also no stranger to theatre having appeared in the UK tour of Boogie Nights and the West End hit Respect La Diva, as well as countless pantomimes all over the country. Prior to panto season Andy will be touring the UK in The Nat King Cole Songbook.

Sleeping Beauty marks the second year that Imagine Theatre will be producing panto in Rotherham and Steve Boden, Managing Director of Imagine Theatre, says “We are delighted to be returning to Rotherham for this year’s festive season. Last year’s production of Dick Whittington was a great success and we got some wonderful feedback from audience members.

“We are really pleased to be working with Andy Abraham for the first time this year, and his fabulous vocal talent means we are all particularly excited about the musical numbers for the show.”

Steve added: “Sleeping Beauty is one of the UK’s most loved pantomimes. As many people may know, it tells the story of a Princess who is cursed by the wicked fairy Carabosse so that upon her eighteenth birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into an enchanted sleep. Of course for our version we have added all the traditional elements of pantomime with a larger than life dame and a hilarious comic, lots of fun slapstick routines and elaborate musical numbers. It is definitely going to be another great show this year.”

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities, Cllr Sarah Allen added: “The Civic Theatre panto is always something to look forward to and this year will be no exception. I know I certainly enjoyed it! I am delighted to hear that Andy will be joining the cast for this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty.”

Dick Whittington pantomime cast

Rotherham panto fans will have a festive treat when ITV Heartbeat’s David Lonsdale stars in the rags-to-riches fairy tale Dick Whittington.

Rotherham Civic Theatre in partnership with Imagine Theatres welcomes David to town for his performance as “Alderman Fitzwarren” in this year’s spectacular production.

The story of Dick Whittington follows the adventures of Dick and his feline friend Tommy the Cat as they travel to London where the streets are supposed to be paved with gold in the hope of seeking fame and fortune. Can they defeat King Rat and his plague of rodents? Will Dick Whittington win the heart of Alice Fitzwarren?

Originally from Southport, David is best known for playing David Stockwell in long-running television series Heartbeat. Having worked on two projects for Netflix and the BBC, he has made various appearances in Coronation Street, as well as Casualty and a small part in the 1997 hit film The Full Monty.

Rotherham Theatres Manager Jo Longworth said she’s delighted David is starring in this year’s family show which will be packed with music and dance, and full of fun, with some boos and hisses thrown in for good measure.

She added: “We’re thrilled to have David perform in Rotherham’s family pantomime. He is a seasoned performer from one of television’s best loved programmes and we warmly welcome his return to Yorkshire.

“After appearing in numerous pantomimes, he’s perfect for the role of good-natured merchant Alderman Fitzwarren. We cannot wait to see David performing on stage and he will be fabulous at getting the audience to join in!”

Joining David on stage as heroic Dick Whittington is Nathan Guy, who has performed in various pantomime productions and appeared in the show This Way Up at Hull Truck Theatre. Nathan trained in post-graduate acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Ashley Andrew will play Alice Fitzwarren, who has acted in roles continuously since graduating from Musical Theatre at Motherwell College in 2008.

This year’s panto dame Ian Hallard will bring laughter and slapstick comedy as Dame Sarah the Cook. Ian is familiar with South Yorkshire having studied at the University of Sheffield. He later achieved a post-graduate course at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

Ian has starred in numerous theatre roles from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has also appeared in television shows Dr Who, Miss Marple, Sherlock and daytime series Doctors.

Huddersfield born Ann Micklethwaite will perform as Fairy Bow-Bells, and has appeared in television soap Emmerdale and in John Godber’s 2017 feature film Last Laugh.

This is the first time that Rotherham Theatres has worked in partnership with Imagine Theatre for their pantomime production.

A live band will perform a musical accompaniment to help bring the production to life.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities Cllr Sarah Allen, said: “We’re very excited for the start of the pantomime season which looks to be the best one yet with the brilliant combination of a professional cast, live music and fabulous costumes. There will be lots of fun and laughter, and audience participation throughout this spectacular production. It will be a wonderful festive experience for Rotherham panto fans and we look forward to welcoming audiences of all ages to the Civic Theatre.”

The show runs from Friday 30 November 2018 until Sunday 6 January 2019. Tickets start from just £11.50.

Tickets for Dick Whittington pantomime are on sale now and can be purchased quickly and easily online at the Rotherham Theatres website.

Dick Whittington pantomime cast

Rotherham Civic Theatre are delighted to announce that this year they will be working alongside Imagine Theatre, one of the country’s top pantomime producers, on the spectacular rags to riches panto adventure Dick Whittington.

The show will star former Heartbeat actor David Lonsdale as Alderman Fitzwarren with Ian Hallard as our Dame Sarah the Cook, Nathan Guy as Dick Whittington. They will be joined by Ann Micklethwaite as Fairy Bow Bells, Ashley Andrew as Alice Fitzwarren and Paul Stirrat as King Rat.

For David Lonsdale it will be a welcome return to Yorkshire where he worked for many years on the hugely popular Heartbeat and he is looking forward to his first appearance at Rotherham Civic Theatre. “I definitely need my yearly dose of silliness doing panto as in the last year I have worked on two TV projects for Netflix and the BBC, been the director of the Southport Festival, as well as selling my first radio play which I was delighted about.”

“Pantomime is a very special part of my life. I find myself completely immersed in it for two months each year and it completely takes over! The constant laughter and music has a lovely effect on me and I honestly wouldn’t give it up for the world. Laughing is so good for us, audience and actors alike, and it’s that continual jollity that I love most about doing the shows.”

Dame, Ian Hallard, is also looking forward to a return to Yorkshire having been to university in Sheffield. He says “I have friends who have done panto at the Civic before and they’ve told me how lovely the team at the theatre is, and how warm and welcoming the audiences are and as some of my university friends are still in the area they will be coming to see the show which will be lovely.”

“My favourite thing about playing Dame is the fabulous costumes – and Imagine Theatre’s wardrobe department have really pulled out the stops this year! Plus of course the interaction with the audience. As Dame, you probably get to be a bit cheekier than any other panto character, and the audience participation is really great!”

Nathan Guy will be taking on the role of the title character Dick Whittington who travels to London with his faithful sidekick Tommy the cat, to seek his fortune. Along the way in pure panto style he has to protect the city from an evil villain, King Rat, as well as falling in love with the beautiful Alice Fitzwarren. “I am delighted to be playing Dick Whittington. Up until now I’ve only played the comedy side kick in pantos but now I am so excited because I finally get to play the hero. What’s more I’m really looking forward to putting my own little goofy shine on it!”

“The most wonderful thing about panto is it’s at Christmas time, and everyone is in a fabulous mood so it’s an all-round joyful experience. I love singing, dancing, comedy, acting, storytelling, working with children and interacting with an audience. The audience is the most important part of panto, and as long as I can make sure that they feel a part of our story and the crazy fun, then I’m sure we are all going to have the best time.”

Steve Boden, Managing Director of Imagine Theatre, says “We are delighted to be bringing panto to Rotherham for the first time this year. We have a fabulous cast lined up most of whom we have worked with in the past but we are also delighted to welcome Ann Micklethwaite to the Imagine team this year. She is an absolutely fabulous performer and is going to be a brilliant Fairy Bow Bells.”

The show runs from Friday 30 November 2018 until Sunday 6 January 2019.

Example of new seating in the Rotherham Civic Theatre

The many thousands of people who enjoy performances at Rotherham’s Civic Theatre can expect a fresh experience when new seating is gradually installed over the coming weeks.
After about 100 years of active service at both the Civic and previously the town’s Regent Theatre, the chairs are ready to be replaced. Some of the seats will remain at the Civic Theatre but the majority will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by local Rotherham auctioneers, Paul Beighton.

Mark Scott, Manager at Rotherham Theatres said, “Over the years we’ve had many performers comment on how beautiful and striking the seating looks when seen from the stage. However, customers did find them a bit cramped and uncomfortable, and many had become defective. So, swayed by public opinion, we have decided it is time for new seating to be installed.”

“We have trialled a version of the new seat with customers since Easter and after positive feedback we have now agreed on the final chair design which will give greater comfort and hopefully pinch a bit more leg room.”

Auditoria Seats from Rotherham will supply the new chairs which will be installed in phases with the project fully completed in early October.

The first batch of the old seating will be auctioned on Sunday 23 August and further information will appear on the auctioneers’ website,

The Nolans have worked with some of the world’s most respected artists including the legendary Frank Sinatra. Their music success ensured that the Nolans put an entire generation “In The Mood For Dancing!”

The Nolans line-up has changed many times, however, Maureen, stayed with the group until they disbanded in 2005. The original girl group reunited in 2009 – with a new album, DVD and a sell-out UK tour, with some venues selling out within hours.

Volunteering at the Civic Theatre

The Civic Theatre has a long history of welcoming volunteers to work alongside the staff team and now, on the back of National Volunteering Week, they are looking for more volunteers.

Rotherham Civic Theatre has entertained over 4 million visitors since it opened in 1960. Watching productions by local dance groups and societies, national touring productions or the ever popular pantomime has given lasting memories.

From back stage to front of house, a small team of people make sure that everything runs smoothly and visitors enjoy themselves.

Volunteers show people to their seats, sell programmes, assist with safety and security and chat to people who are visiting to give them a friendly welcome.

People volunteer at the Civic Theatre because they enjoy being with people. Some people volunteer as a friendly, social activity and a ‘night out’. For some people it is also a way of gaining confidence and learning to work with the public.

Volunteer Jackie Houghton said, “I like to think that my contribution as a volunteer helps to keep live theatre open in Rotherham. I enjoy dealing with the public face-to-face, particularly the children at panto.”

Maria Taylor added, “I love stewarding at the Civic Theatre in Rotherham. It is a super little theatre and has a lovely atmosphere.

“Taking tickets and showing people to their seats with a smile and having a few words about the show is a really enjoyable and rewarding experience.

“Sometimes people tell you they have never been to the theatre before and how much they have enjoyed it and will make a return visit.

“It can be hard work sometimes especially when the pantomime season is here, but it’s a great pleasure to have contributed in a small way to the general public’s enjoyment of the theatre.”

Jeanne Tilley agreed: “I am happy to be a steward because it helps keep a local amenity open for everybody in Rotherham to enjoy at a reasonable price.

“I get a thrill when I see the children’s faces during and after the pantomime and similarly enjoy the adults’ appreciation of any show.

“It is nice to be part of the excitement of a theatre performance in some small way and to feel I am contributing to the audience’s enjoyment of an evening out.

“I enjoy meeting the other stewards and staff for a sociable few minutes before and after each performance.”

Could you volunteer at the Civic Theatre?

Volunteers receive training, free tea and coffee and are able to watch some of the shows as long as they are aware of the needs of the audience during the show.

All volunteers are invited to the launch of the pantomime with a drink in the bar after the performance and chance to meet the cast – this years’ panto is Aladdin.

If you want to know more about volunteering at the Civic Theatre please contact Julie Ogden on 01709 823641 or email

Rotherham Panto Welcomes A Beast Of A Star!

The weather may be (finally) heating up, but, Rotherham Theatres are looking towards the fun of the festive period by signing a ‘huge’ name for this year’s panto!

2014 PANTOMIME: ALADDIN – starring “The Beast” from ITV’s ‘The Chase’

Mark Labbett, better known as “The Beast” on ITV game show The Chase in the UK has been snapped up to star as the evil Abanazar in this year’s production, Aladdin!

Six foot seven inch Mark took up his role in the popular TV show in 2009 and became the sole ‘chaser’ on the show’s American counterpart in 2013. No stranger to the big stage, Mark has appeared twice on Mastermind and Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

As Rotherham Theatre’s Manager, Mark Scott, explains, rugby fan Mark is more than ready to ‘tackle’ one of the biggest panto roles going.

“Mark is originally from Newport in Wales, but, since moving to the area, he’s not only become a household name, but also a ‘huge’ fan of the Civic Theatre and I know he’s thrilled to be taking up such an iconic role! “He’s the perfect person to play such a famously imposing character like Abanazar. Mark will be fabulous at bringing the role to life and getting the audience hissing and booing.

“If past shows are anything to go by, this one should be a cracker, especially now we have The Beast on our side. We have a new company producing the show, Shone Productions, who are a genuinely fantastic forward-thinking modern company managed by James Shone, who produces shows with dazzling dance routines, great songs and stunning scripts.

“Also returning this year is a live band, who will be replacing the pre-recorded tunes of the past to bring some real, live atmosphere to the show. We haven’t had a live band in panto for over a decade so it will be a really special occasion and something to look forward to.”

Joining Mark will be Ricky K, who will star in the title role as Aladdin. Ricky recently wowed Simon Cowell with his visual comedy routines in his Britain’s Got Talent audition and subsequent semi final. He’s expecting a similarly rapturous reception from Rotherham audiences when he brings his wacky antics to the Civic stage.

Also joining the cast are West End Star Alexandra Hans as the beautiful Princess Jasmine, and back by popular demand, is Mark Hudson, who brought the theatre to its knees last year as Dame, will return as the famous, and infamous, Widow Twankey.

2014 PANTOMIME: ALADDIN – Tickets on sale NOW

Mark Scott added: “What we have potentially, is a comedy double act who are going make each show a must see! “I’ve no doubt that with Ricky, the two Marks, the live band and a fresh production, this year will be a special one for panto fans in Rotherham and I can’t wait!”

Tickets for Aladdin are on sale now and can be purchased safely, securely and quickly online.

After watching the magnificent Rotherham United Football Club promotion parade in Rotherham town centre, the good news is set to continue, when the star of Rotherham’s 2014 Pantomime Aladdin, hilarious comedian Ricky K battles it out for a place in the final of Britain’s Got Talent.

Ricky wowed Simon Cowell with his visual comedy routines in his Britain’s Got Talent audition – which made Simon “Laugh out loud”.

The first stars have been announced for this year’s magical pantomime Aladdin: Ricky K (who will star in the title role as “Aladdin”) will be joined by last year’s side-splittingly funny panto dame from Beauty and The Beast, “Dame Dolly”, played by Rotherham’s favourite panto dame Mark Hudson, who returns by popular demand as “Widow Twankey”. More stars for this year’s pantomime will be revealed soon.
